Requesting a Urine Drug Screen
- Collect a supervised urine specimen, 20-50mL*, in a standard microurine container. For medico-legal drug testing, it is recommended that a split specimen is taken.
- For guidelines on collecting supervised urines, refer to document AS/NZS 4308, described above.
- Ensure the patient's name and date of collection are marked in waterproof ink on the container.
- Fill out the request form with details of tests required (see below) and any known medication including Methadone. Indicate dose of Methadone.
- Make sure we know which clinic, hospital or other organsation you represent.
- Ensure container does not leak. Overtightening may crack plastic.
- Package urine/s in an esky type of container or a cardboard box. Box must be padded with newspaper. Urines should be contained in a suitably sealed plastic bag to prevent spillage.
- Documentation should be placed on top of container in a plastic bag to prevent any contamination.
- Deliver form and specimen to the laboratory.
- Please note specimens transported by air or Australia Post must comply with IATA packaging regulations. Contact us for advice.
*If less than 20mL is collected then analysis will only be conducted if we are notified in advance. The laboratory utilises automated dispensing which is unable to sample on smaller volumes.
